LineEdgeCaliper - 16

This tool uses two symmetrical trace combs to find two approximately parallel lines. The distance and angle between the lines are calculated. When the lines are not parallel, the distance is calculated as follows: The middle line is drawn between the lines. The point where this middle line crosses the middle normal of the base line is found. In this point a normal to the middle line (the base middle normal) is drawn crossing each of the two measured lines. The distance is measured between these points of intersection.

Setup

Reference - Reference system selection

Orientation - the tool's region of interest. Orientation of the trace comb’s base line. Choose either start point or center point for the base line.

  • Center-X - center x of roi
  • Center-Y - center y of roi
  • Width - width of base line
  • Angle - angle of trace comb

Search lines

  • Count - number of trace lines
  • Start point - position of starting point on trace line given in reference coordinates
  • End point - position of end point on trace line given in reference coordinates
    • Inverted the sign of start and stop point will change the direction of the trace comb
  • Step length - normally 1 - given in pixels
  • Line width - 0 - trace line is not averaged - a higher value will average N pixels perpendicular to the trace comb

Point & Click Clipboard Support

The ROI can be managed by the buttons

  • Paste - paste the ROI from the image to the scorpion clipboard
  • Copy - copy the ROI to the image from the scorpion clipboard

Point & Click Clipboard Support

The line defines the baseline of the two tracelines. The line defines the width and the center of the two tracecomb. To edit length of tracecomb used the tool's length field.

One point will change the ROI center point.

Edge detection

  • Threshold - the threshold or sensitivity of the edge detector - a lower value increases the sensitivity
  • Polarity - All transitions | Light to dark | Dark to light

Advanced

Search parameters

  • Search mode - Peak | Threshold
  • Fit tolerance - points outside tolerance is not accepted
    • Tolerance given in pixels or reference coordinates
    • More information - Line fit.
  • Goodness (points) - minimum number of points fitted to line to be accepted
  • Risk (PPM) - typical value 1 - a lower value will increase the number of iteration to find the line

Filter

  • Smooth base - 3 is normally a good value
  • Smooth counter - 1 default - given i pixels
    • The smoothing increasing with higher values
  • Differentiation
    • 0 - give threshold
    • 1 - 1. order differentiation - the derivative - default normally used
    • 2 - 2. order differentiation
